THREE WISE MEN OR MAGIC KINGS, A SPANISH TRADITION

The first Spanish and Canary Island´s 2013 Fiestas start on Saturday January 5, when the Three Wise Men or Magic Kings (Reyes Magos) as the Spanish know them, arrive by camel to main cities of Spain.

Their Majesties, the Kings of the Orient, Gaspar, Melchior and Balthasar, will arrive to be greeted by hundreds of children before making their way through the streets of Santa Cruz, Tenerife.

For those children that were maybe naughtier than nice for Santa, it’s a second chance for them to send in their requests for gifts letters to their favourite Kings will be personally collected from the special boxes placed this year in Plaza Candelaria ( Santa Cruz Tenerife, Canary Islands)

The Spanish tradition is that Children can only write a letter to their favourite King and not stack the odds by applying to all three. You can distinguish the Kings easily as Gaspar is blond, Melchior has a white beard and Balthasar has dark skin, from Africa. Children are advised to bring along their own plastic bags to fill them with the candies and gifts thrown into the crowd by the passing parade.
